Coding mentor vs bootcamp vs self-taught: which should you choose?

The short answer

Choose self-study if you have finished hard things alone before and money is tight. Choose a full-time bootcamp if you can stop working for three or four months and want a cohort and hiring partners. Choose a 1-on-1 mentor if you need to keep your income, want a path built around your hours, and have stalled before because nobody was looking at your code.

ZAM Academy is a mentorship programme, so we are not neutral. That is why this page says when the other routes are the better choice, and quotes published figures you can check.

The four routes

What each route is, and who it suits.

Self-taught

Free, flexible, and entirely up to you.

Courses, documentation, videos and AI are more than enough material. What you supply yourself is the direction and the feedback.

  • Suits: people who have finished a hard course alone before
  • Cost: free to low
  • Watch for: finishing courses but not being able to build from a blank file

Coding bootcamp

Intensive, structured, on the cohort's schedule.

A fixed curriculum, classmates and often hiring partners, compressed into a few months. Full-time programmes usually mean stopping work.

  • Suits: people who can stop working for three or four months
  • Cost: US$3,164 – 5,650 · RM 12,879 – 22,997 in published tuition
  • Watch for: a pace set for the group rather than for you

Mentor marketplace

Expert help, booked by the hour.

Book an experienced developer when you need one. Good marketplace mentors are excellent; the plan and continuity depend on the person you find.

  • Suits: people who already know what they are building
  • Cost: US$120 – 450/mo · ≈ RM 488 – 1,832/mo
  • Watch for: paying for answers without a path between them

1-on-1 mentorship (ZAM)

A path, a mentor and a weekly review, around your life.

One mentor matched to your goal from a team led by Azzam Makki, a roadmap built from your starting point, private sessions on your own code, and Zami AI between sessions.

  • Suits: beginners who have stalled learning alone
  • Cost: three monthly plans, no contract
  • Watch for: fewer classmates than a cohort; the group Q&A is weekly

Competitor figures are published prices for the category, not for any one company, checked on 25 August 2026. Offers change — bootcamps and marketplaces publish their own instalment plans, trials and refund terms, and you should read them. Re-verified before every republish.

When I would tell you to pick something else

You can stop working for three months.

Take the bootcamp. You get a cohort, an alumni network and hiring partners — read their published outcomes and refund terms, they are good ones.

You already know what you are building and just get stuck occasionally.

Hire someone by the hour on a marketplace. You do not need a curriculum and you should not pay for one.

You only need explanations, and you already know what to build next.

Use ChatGPT or Claude with a good roadmap. It is free or close to it. Come back if you notice you cannot build anything without it.

You have finished a hard technical course entirely on your own before.

Self-study works, and it is free. Come back if week seven goes the way it usually does.

This is for the person in the middle: serious and stuck — not because the material is too hard, but because nobody is looking at your code.

What about AI?

Can you learn to code with ChatGPT instead?

AI is the best explainer most beginners have ever had, and every route above should use it. It is a weaker substitute for direction and review: it answers the question you ask, but it does not notice that you are learning things in the wrong order, that your project will not hold up, or that you stopped showing up three weeks ago.

Use AI to explain, a roadmap to choose what to learn, and a person to review what you built. Zami, ZAM's AI tutor, works inside your roadmap and submissions for that reason, and gives hints rather than finished code.

Questions

Common questions, answered plainly.

Is a coding bootcamp worth it?

It can be, if you can stop working for its duration, its curriculum matches the job you want, and you have read its published outcomes and refund terms. It is a poor fit if you need to keep earning or learn better at your own pace.

Is a coding mentor worth the money?

It is worth it if you have stalled before for lack of direction or feedback, because that is exactly what a mentor provides. If you only get stuck occasionally on a project you already understand, hourly help is cheaper and enough.

Can you become a developer by teaching yourself?

Yes, people do. It takes discipline, a sensible order of topics and some way of getting feedback on your code, whether that is a community, a friend who codes or a mentor. Employers look at what you built, not how you learned.

What is the cheapest way to learn to code?

Self-study with free material. ZAM's roadmap tool, skill check and build challenge are free and need no account, and so are its written guides and the seven-day Django course.

How is ZAM different from a mentor marketplace?

On a marketplace you find and manage an individual mentor yourself. At ZAM you are matched with one mentor from a team led by Azzam Makki, working from a shared roadmap and platform with Zami AI, a practice workspace, code review and progress tracking, so your plan does not depend on one person's own system.

Can I try ZAM before paying?

Yes. You start with two free private classes and no card: a diagnosis of your goal and level, then a real coding session with feedback. Your mentor then recommends one plan, and you decide.

Start with two free classes

See whether a mentor is the right route before you pay anything.

The first class maps your goal, level and weekly hours. The second is a real coding session with feedback. Then your mentor recommends one plan, and you decide.
